Your New Favourite Band Week: Ethan Jano

by thethreepennyguignol

Man, I’m excited about this song. Sometimes, you hear a track and go, “yeah, sure, that’s cool£, and find that it’s snuck it’s way into your favourites list months later. And sometimes you hear a track and go “I want to tattoo this into my ears”. Ethan Jano’s How You Should Be, from his upcoming debut album I’ll Be Fine (out on the 10th of this month- buy it) is the latter.

I dig Americana anyway, but this isn’t your usual skin-deep artist who’s taken a quick look round the house and written a song about whatever they saw kicking around there. Jano delves into American history, tugging at a rich musical history that ranges from protest songs from the 20s through to Bob Dylan up to Ryan Adams. This track knows it’s shit.

And then, of course, there’s that voice. It’s one of those voices that’s instantly…different in some way. There’s nothing generic about these vocals, and that’s really saying something- Jano’s throaty, smoke-tinged voice punches through the number with a swaddling entirety that leaves you a little bit hypnotized. This is ramshackle junk rock of the highest order, and I’m in love with it.
