Single of the Week: Surface Envy by Sleater-Kinney

by thethreepennyguignol

Well, my Christmas has come magnificently early this year, with a new single from Sleater-Kinney to see in the festive fuckin’ season. Yup, after way too long on hiatus, the ultimate riot grrrl act are back with a brisk and brilliant single off their new album, due out next month.

Surface Envy is everything you might want from the legendary monarchs of rock; it’s a single that ricochets off itself, bouncing against waterfall guitar lines and the kind of vocals you wish came with an instruction booklet. There’s nowhere to hide in the crisp, clean production that relies entirely on the band’s ability to squeeze the rough, raw emotion out of a simple three-minute single, an ability that they exploit to it’s fullest potential. Surface Envy is undeniable proof that there is always something left to bring to the table as long as you’ve got the balls to eat it up.
