Single of the Week: Figure It Out by Royal Blood

by thethreepennyguignol

Recently longlisted for the BBC Sound of 2014 Award, Royal Blood are by far my favourite band on that list. It’s occupied mostly by pop, electronica, r&b, any combination of the above, and Royal Blood inject a much needed dose of rock. Purveyors of strong, chunky, noise rock, their latest single Figure It Out starts out with a big Parental Advisory: Explicit Content Symbol, worn like a badge of honour I’d be suspicious of any good rock song that didn’t do the same.

The song itself is a perfect blend of muffled indie vocals, frantic solos, and a simple bass-guitar-drums set-up. They succeed in wringing every drop of potential from their line-up, subscribing to the kind of retro-rock laid out by The Black Keys and the like. It’s fast, full of atmosphere, and has bigger balls than a prizewinning stud horse. I can’t find anything not to like.
